BioScience 'LEAP' paper:

A summary of the 'Land-use Effects on Amphibian Populations' from three regions (Maine, Missouri, South Carolina) has finally been published in the November 2009 issue of BioScience. Former MU graduate students Elizabeth Harper, Dan Hocking, Tracy Rittenhouse, and Betsie Rothermel all contributed research results to the paper. Research was supported by a Collaborative Grant from the National Science Foundation (DEB 0239943).

New Graduate Students:

Grant Connette - from Davidson College, North Carolina; Katie O'Donnell - from Oakland University, Michigan; Bill Peterman - from Butler University & University of Missouri

Kristen Malone is a senior Biological Sciences major from St. James, Missouri. In the past year, her research won first place in a Life Sciences Week category (Genetics, Environment and Evolution) and was presented in Washington DC at Posters on the Hill, not to mention at MU’s recent Summer and Spring Forums. The poster title for her recent research is “Juvenile salamander dispersal and use of terrestrial microhabitat cues.” see The Connections Newsletter April/May 2009 (view PDF file)

LEAP:

(March 2007) We were finally able to burn one of the clearcut quadrants at each of our replicate Missouri LEAP Sites. Below is Chris Conner, Dan Hocking, Mike Osbourn, and Tracy Rittenhouse on 6 March 2007 at Pond 2, ready for action!

Gus Raeker (DBCA Manager) and staff (Jeff and Tony) worked hard to prepare firelines for burning LEAP clearcut sites. The controlled burns finally happened at Ponds 2 & 4 on 6 March and at Ponds 1 & 5 on 7 March! Below is a picture by Dan of brush piles blasing at Pond 4.
