Halloween Reading Suggestions For the Parents & Kiddies

One constant in our ever hectic household is the presence of BOOKS - lots of BOOKS. What better way to share ones love of a subject dear to ones heart than through prose? As a father of three who loves the Halloween season I have found that one way to convey my love of this holiday is by reading age appropriate seasonal books with my kids (This premise applies to other holidays, such as Christmas, as well). We have assembled a pretty decent little library of Halloween Seasonal books and this page is dedicated to passing on these little gems to all the parents (and kids at heart) out there. Check out some of our favorites!

As you look through the synopses for these books you will encounter a letter(s) corresponding to reading level I have developed based on our own kids' abilities (hence take this with some grain of salt, not every kid is the same), as defined below:

Reading Level Key:

P/B = Pre-reading (infant) to Beginner (preschool)

B = Beginner (preschool)

D = Developing (preschool to 2nd grade)

P = Proficient (2nd grade to 4th grade)

A = Advanced (beyond 4th grade)

In alphabetical order

ABC's of Halloween

Mannie's Synopsis: Cute illustrations for this "learning" while loving Halloween book. Each letter has associated with it a little poem of words starting with that particular letter. Mannie's Synopsis: Fabulously fun book. Perfectly repetitive for young readers without being too repetitive (for parents sanity). Wonderfully illustrated. Story and pictures are appropriate for most preschoolers - illustrations are possibly "too scary" for some.

Reading Level: B up (with caveat above)

Halloween Nights: Twenty-one Spooktacular Poems

by Charles Ghigna

Mannie's Synopsis: One of my recent favorites. Most of the poems are pretty cool. A little dark for the little ones who can make images from spoken words, but entirely in keeping with a classic gothic halloween. Illustrations are nice too.

Jack O'Lantern's Scary Halloween

by Robert Kraus

Plumply, Dumply Pumpkin

by Mary Serfozo

Mannie's Synopsis: Cute little book. The Animations are simple (not particularly impressive to adults) but effective for the kids. It's a story of a tiger kit who picks the "best pumpkin, carves it (with his dad), lights it, and wins a Jack-O-Lantern contest! What better basic story of one of the most enduring traditions of Halloween?

Reader Level: P/B up

Porkenstein

by Kathryn Lasky and David Jarvis

Mannie's Synopsis: I don't actually own this one (the only one on the page we don't own) but picked it up at the Columbia Public Library. Really fun book. Mixes the story of the "three little pigs" (or more appropriately what happens to the surviving brother who is an inventor) and "frankenstein" in a fun kid-appropriate story. All my kids love this one and we've read it every night since picking it up. Story is not scary but rather humorous and text is appropriate for young readers.

Reader Level: B up

Scary, Scary Halloween

by Eve Bunting (Illustrated by Jan Brell)

Mannie's Synopsis: I love the Illustrations in this book. The pictures might actually too "Scary, Scary" for some little ones. On first read you may even think the content is a bit intense for children, but it's really a story about a family of cats (the creepy eyes on the cover) that fear kids dressed in monster costumes trick-or-treating because they think they are monsters. Adults might want to pre-read this one before reading it to the little ones to come up with an appropriate stategy to avoid scares.

Reading Level: B/D up (with caveats above)
