
Wildfire in native Florida scrub on Feb. 12, 2001, during the worst drought on record for the state. Fires are caused often by lightning strikes, railroads--as in this case--, and other human activities.

Saw palmettos were the first woody shrubs to re-sprout after the burn in Feb. 2001 and some, as shown her, sent out inflorescences before leaves. The scrub oaks and lyonias re-sprouted later on.
