 Sign at entrance to main drive at Archbold Biological Station, Lake Placid, in south-central Florida

Primary building at the Archbold Station located at west end of the main drive. It houses the office, research labs, education center, library, kitchen, and dining room. The structure was built in 1931 to function as a warehouse that could also serve as a fire-proof, hurricane-proof emergency center. For this purpose, the building is supported its own electrical generator, water treatment facility, and fire department.
